The Ruanoke Island Dinasier—the Inaction thr Kacy Department.—The fact cannot be con cealed that criminal negligence is chargeable somewhere for the disastrous overthrow of our ! brave and gallant men at Roanoke Island. I The brave men who fought the enemy at Ro- ' anoke Island, and many of wlioin poured out their blood like water in the tuiile attempt to maintain their stand against an overwelming force, were sacrificed to a criminal neglect to reinforce them. Notwithstandiug the knowledge possessed by every man in our uiidst and within the bounds Oi the Confederacy, of the fitting out of the Burn side Expedition—notwithstanding its reported presence hovering off the Carolina coast—notwith standing its proclaimed arrival off Roanoke Island, disclosing the manifest intention of the enemy to attack that devoted Island and to possess it as • another strategic base for future and more impor- * tant operations,—uotwithstAnding the fact known to our men in power, that this important post was not sufficiently manned—that the force there was inadequate to defend it against the attack by which it had been menaced for weeks—notwith- i standing this and more, which might be stated, ^ yet that handful of brave and devoted men were suffered to remain there insufficiently reinforced, and to await the moment when, apparently un cared for, they were to be “butchered to make ’ ' a Northern “holiday,” and to furnish the demor- i alized press of the savage and soullcbs North a fit i theme lor their truculent boastings and fiendish I huzzas. If the vulneraUe points on our extended j coast are to be defended at all, let them be de- I tended effectively, or, at least, with some reason able regard to the overpowering forces which have hitherto been concentrated against them. To garrison them with a force so inade|uate as that which fought to the death at Roanoke, is to con vert them into slaughter pens, and criminally sacrifice the lives of Our brave and devoted men. W’^e ought to have had in the Sound twenty gunboat.3 or more—such as could have carried, each, one effective rifled gun. Ten months have elapsed since the Navy Yard here came providentially into our possession by desertion—and fifty such gunboats might have been easily constructed there, armed, manned, and placed at the mouths of the numerous and small streams in the sound and elsewhere. But there has not one single one such been here con structed. This is a startling fact and evinces what the public regard as culpable negligence. Although within u few hours ride of this great and inestimable depot to the Confedederacy, Mr. Secretary Mallory has not once visited the Navy Yard since he warmed his official seat. Let it never be lost sight of for a moiuent at a time, that this poTnt—this Navy \ ard, i» one of incalculable importance to the Southern Con federacy.—yiorfolk Day Booh. The Hawk and the Dove.—A union between Hawk and Dove is a rather strange planetary conjunction or phenomenon, in the conjugal hea vens. We have read of the matrimonial conjunc tion of Mars and Venus in the heathen mytholo gy; of the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus, (Mars looking jealously on,) in the planetary heavens; and of many a poor wight, getting well plucked, between Hawk and Buzzard, in this mundane sphere; but, that a Hawk should ever have chosen a Dove for his mate, and that Hawk should have been a Tommy-Hawk, “was strange, wa.s passing strange”—nay “’twas pitiful, 'twaa wondrous pitiful,” more so than aught else in the history of conjugal, planetary, or ornithological conjunctions: Yet “’tis true, 'tis pity, and pity ’tis, ’tis true,” that tlie thing, no less true than strange, actually happened—as witness the follow ing stanza commemorative of the curious bridal: On the Jlarriage of Thomas Ilaick, of .Vanchetter, C» Mi$t Sarah J. Dovt. It is not often that you see. !So 4ueer » kind of love; Oh! what a savaca he must be To Tommy-hauk a Dove. This old story of Hawk and Dove reminds us of a cognate anecdote, which has never yet, to our know’ledge, been hawked about in the newspapers. The celebrated Dr. F'rancis L. Hawks, D. D., of New York, while enjoying a very rich benefice, in the Empire City, was strongly urged, by pioua friends, to accept a Missionary Bishopric in the far W'est;and,by way of reconciling him to the pecu niary sacrifice, involved in the measure, one of the j pleaders reminded him of the scriptural assurance, j that “even the sparrows should be cared for.’^ Of Leiris'.ative I’.nvor in (ienernl; Legislative Power ( True, replied the ready-witted clergyman, “but A lAlW l$ook. f'tntrti'fti’s Practice at Liair. The other Side—-The War and Hijh J^rires. —A correspondent writes (through the Balti more South) the following paragraph in reply to tlie Baltimore American’s exultations over the high price.s in “rebeldom:” 1 was very agreeably entertained, a few days ago, at your facctious article about salt—hov? it was .'•uch a luxury throughout rebeldoni that they were hoarding up the brine from pork barrels, &c., lVc., whilst here they were literally aotniKj the nh-f'tts with it; and it occurred to me, whilst you were in the vein of humour, to suggest.some oth er items on which you might say something fun ny. For instance, there is a little delicacj called tur, whicii used to sc(l liere for about a dollar a barrel, now retailing at the apothecary shops at fi’pcnny-bit an ounce. Spirits of turpentine, ros in, and pitch are about in the same categui^, whilst another article, essentially nece.ssary in the manufacture of glassware, is already 4U«J percent, higher than it was a year ago, and will double its present value if the war continues a few months longer.
